My work is always made in a critical industrial design manner, even within speculative framework. By taking outlandish ideas and constraining them within an industrial designer’s lens, the work is made believable due to its adherence to real processes.

STORYTELLING THAT SHAPES AN OBJECT

Good fictional narratives cause a dissonance between what is real and unreal in their audiences minds. A suspension of disbelief that prompts the viewers to empathize with the characters story as though it were their own experience. I make works that respect and ground the reality within the story’s script as well as address the needs of the story’s characters.
CAREFULL SERIES [OPPORTUNITY][EASE][CARE][SATISFACTION]

Made in partnership with BURLODGE CANADA to provide independence opportunities for long term care users. By design, the vessels afford mechanical advantage while drinking liquid. We design around opportunity for control rather than around the ways in which the user might fail to operate the product. The patient is allowed to feel at ease in mundane situations that could otherwise be frustrating, giving a better quality of life.

BUILD AROUND CAREPOINTS WITHOUT PAINPOINTS

To focus on only the motor disabilities of the user lacks respect for their possible capability. the mirrored indentations and tapered sides give elderly users purchase to lift and sip without the use of fine motor skills. The Carefull vessels afford hands that cannot squeeze or pinch, the means to lift and enjoy their time with food.

DESIGNING FOR STORY [ITERATIONS][INTERVIEW][MIMIC][READ][SYNTHESIZE]

‘To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars’ by Christopher Paolini, is the novel I chose as my source material to adapt writen objects into film props. In this story, humanity has been sprawling for 250 years across the galaxy with design innovations that combat the challenges of space travel. The narrative follows those who belong to a corporation that studies new habitable planets, using these chosen items to survive the challenges of their deep space environment.

METHODOLOGY LEARNED FROM WRITERS AND FILMMAKERS

I consulted specifically film art directors, to best understand developing fictional texts into credible imagery. This helped me plot out where their ideas first take shape and what they are concerned about when changing from written scripts to visual mediums. It was also important to gather input from a pipeline of concept artists, props fabricators, and even actors on set.

A NONFICTION TREATMENT OF DESIGN WITHIN A FICTION CONTEXT

Because of this methodology, the work respected both the hypothetical user’s needs within the fiction and the suspension of disbelief the work intended to elicit in its audience.
DESIGNING FOR STORY [O.RI DRONE][THROWN][GLIDING][AUTONOMOUS][SURVEILS]

Drones used by explorers to scout on a new planet. The O.RI Drone is a terrain scanning device that requires the user to flick and unfold the drone, opening and making it throwable like a paper airplane to begin flight. This device is sci-fi technology married with real world use cases and familiar behaviors.
DESIGNING FOR STORY [MEDI.FOAM][DIAGNOSE][INJECT]
[SUTURE][CARRY ON]

Simply pulling the trigger or pushing the nozzle into a wound will administer Medifoam, which stops the bleeding and can be used to immobilize critically injured areas. the nozzle and the trigger are both red plastic to best signify where to use the device, with a disposable cannister capable of being removed and refitted once emptied.

DESIGNING FOR STORY [M.LOK HELM] [SEALED][UNLATCHED][OPENED][REMOVED]

The visor lifts and allows people of any head size to don the helm, and once comfortably in place can be securely locked by four red latches. With even one latch engaged the visor will not open, ensuring security for the wearer from the elements.

VEVRO SEAT [SIT][FLEX][RECLINE]

Made to deform from the force of the user sitting and reclining into the chair. More flexion is allowed by  cutting additional slots into the surfaces of the chair, specifically in the center of the back. This allows the user better leaning and posture conformity from the chair.

KRUSHELF [CONNECT][LOCK]
[STAND][STORE]

A corner display shelf made from three sheets of ½” plywood, capable of locking into place without additional methods of fastening. It remains balanced and rigid with heavy weight on each level, while still being ready to be disassembled and flat-packed for storage.
